Why positive affirmations might not be working and what to do instead

Some believe that if they repeat positive affirmations, they can reduce anxiety, but it is not always so for everyone. This is why.

Positive affirmations have been used by many people as a soothing technique, and I'm not saying that it doesn't work, I0mn just saying it might not work for everyone.

As a strong believer in the Law of Attraction, it might be confusing to say that I think that positive affirmations might not be so helpful. Ok, I do believe that positive thoughts result in positive experiences, but the key is: you have to believe it works, if you want to make it happen, if you are unsure about it, it's just repeating a mantra. Let me paint you a picture, if you are feeling anxious about any issue at work, repeating “I'm great at my job, I'm confident and I will pull it off” won't help you if you don't believe you are strong and secure. And in fact, it will bring about more feelings of disappointment.

You'll achieve anything you strongly believe you can do – so be realistic.

What to do instead

” If the challenge now is greater, just think about things you find normal now that used to feel so difficult to do – try to be as rational as possible.

Whenever you are feeling your confidence is wearing off, or that you are anxious about a particular aspect of your life, try to look for positive experiences in the past, use the times you made something you really wanted happen and convince yourself that if you were able to do it in the past, you can do it now. There should be no reason why you wouldn't be able to cope with drawbacks. So, change your positive affirmation and repeat something like “I've done this in the past” or “I have prepared myself for this situation, and I can handle issues.” If the challenge now is greater, just think about things you find normal now that used to feel so difficult to do – try to be as rational as possible.

The bottom line

There is no perfect recipe to deal with negative thoughts, just remember that everyone has their ups and downs, and no matter the problem, you can deal with it and you will.
