I love how convenient is to toss some frozen cranberries and strawberries in my blender and have my morning smoothie. But I’ve never asked myself whether frozen fruit is bad for me, so I decided to do some research. This is what I’ve found!
For years my breakfast has consisted of a smoothie with frozen berries and honey and I thought it was the healthiest option. But is that so?
If you are a busy person like me, it’s a way of incorporating fruit into your diet. Luckily, freezing fruits and vegetables actually puts the nutrient breakdown to a halt until the food is consumed –so I was right!
Fruit is preserved through a process called flash freezing, where the fruit is instantly frozen and maintaining up to 90% of its nutrients. Actually, it might even be healthier than eating fruit that has been sitting at the supermarket for too long. The fact is that as soon as you pick the fruit from the tree, the process of decomposition begins.
So the sooner you eat it, the better. Thus, frozen fruit might preserve more nutrients than fresh food and can actually last up to two years after the processed date –so you’ll be saving money because you needn’t worry about it expiring before you eat it.
There is one thing you have to take into consideration, however. Some companies add sugar or artificial sweetener to make the fruit tastier –stay away from those. Buy the ones that contain nothing else than frozen fruit. Then, if you consume frozen fruit, not only will it hold its nutrients for longer than fresh fruit, but also you’ll be profiting from a good source of fiber, vitamins and it’ll boost your immune system and a healthier heart.
