Its popularity has increased lately, but what is nutritional yeast and how do we use it?

Unlike brewer's yeast, which is a by-product of brewing, nutritional yeast is an inactive form of yeast that is mainly used as a food supplement. It is made from molasses or beet sugar, which are fermented for 7 days and later pasteurised, cleaned and dried.

It has a golden colour and is usually sold as flakes. Its flavour is reminiscent of cheese, which makes it a very popular ingredient in vegan cuisine.

Among the benefits of this superfood is its great contribution of fibre, easy-to-digest amino acids, B vitamins and minerals. All nutrients that help to maintain beautiful skin, strong nails and shiny hair.

It is also rich in thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and B vitamins, a complex that provides energy and helps maintain proper brain function, it also has a positive impact on the ability to burn fat and regulate the sleep cycle.

It has 16 different amino acids, including all the essential ones; 14 minerals, such as magnesium, zinc, manganese, copper, phosphorous, and chromium (which helps lose weight); and 17 vitamins. Nutritional yeast is also a good source of protein, but unlike nuts or legumes,  it does not contain fat or carbohydrates.

You can use nutritional yeast to enrich all your dishes and give sauces, soups, salads, baked vegetables and even desserts a creamier texture, not to mention the delicious vegan cheese that you can make with it.

Its flavour is reminiscent of walnuts and cured cheese, making it an ideal replacement for salt. Highly recommended for sprinkling on popcorn or even smoothies.

Side effects

While nutritional yeast is a wonderful product to incorporate into your meals, you have to increase its consumption gradually. It’s very high in fibre so you may need to take it slowly to avoid having digestive problems. As with everything else, read the labels before you buy the product. Not all nutritional yeats are fortified, so it may not all contain vitamin B12 or other vitamins.
