Looking at our trash we realize how much disposable plastic we throw away each day, proceeding, the vast majority of food wrappers. This plastic is not only harmful to the environment. It is also harmful to our health because even if we don't want to eat plastic, it has consequences.
I know, plastic bags are super practical, you use them, throw them away and forget about them because we just simply don't get to see our landfills packed with waste. But what about our environment? You have to make a change. To eliminate or drastically reduce plastic it is necessary to go by parts.
You can start by getting a fridge without plastics, that is, that the food we keep in it is not wrapped, protected or preserved in plastic. The refrigerator is one of the main entrances of single-use plastic in the home, especially if we buy it in large stores. We have become used to seeing such unnecessary scenes as a cut and plastic-coated pumpkin, zucchini spaghetti in bags, a cucumber covered in plastic, salad bags, two apples on a tray and so on. Well, don't shop carry your own tote bag and stay away from unnecessary wrappings.
On the other hand, in the small shops and markets of all times, these absurdities are less frequent, although of course we still find plastic but in less quantity.
If the majority of our shopping is based on fresh foods, bags for fruit and vegetables and packaging for dairy products, meat and fish, are the main source of plastics in our shopping and finally, most of our rubbish. To reject them, there are several alternatives:
1. Using reusable bags
For bulk buying of fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts.
2. Carrying lunch boxes or silicone bags
For wet foods such as cheese, olives, meat, fish, etc, you can find recipients that are reusable.
3. Shopping cart
To save everything, use the shopping cart, a backpack, a basket, etc.
4. Set some time aside to go for groceries
If we do our shopping in a hurry, without having done the weekly menu or the list beforehand, we will most likely fall into individual containers, savings packs, plastic salads, precooked meals, etc., and we will probably forget our cloth bags and containers to store the food, unwittingly acquiring more plastic.
Therefore, getting organized is essential to achieve a fridge without plastics and also helps to follow a healthy diet.
