Ok, your favorite serum has just expired, sure there is no harm in using it a few more times, right? This is what happens to your skin if you use an expired beauty product.
I must confess I didn't use to be the kind of person who would take expiration dates in beauty products too seriously, but after reading about what it could cause to my skin, I might have changed my mind.
Is it really that bad to use an expired beauty product?
Most makeup and skincare products contain active ingredients that, once past the expiration date, can encourage bacteria growth. If you apply them to your skin, it can lead to irritation, redness, or other skin concerns.
Most products' expiration dates are based on when they are opened, not when they are formulated, because bacteria can contaminate the product once it has been exposed to air. Even if the product is not contaminated, those active ingredients might cease to work after the expiration date because they lose their stability or lose potency over time.
Have you ever seen a small picture of a jar with a number in it? Well, that indicates how many months the product will be good to use after it has been opened.
Needless to say, if you see any change in color, texture or smell, you should definitely toss the products.
